METEMPSYCHOSIS

Metempsychosis, reincarnation and the transmigration of the soul are essentially different names for the same thing. Among the ancient Greeks, metempsychosis was a belief that the soul and body were united by a compact which is dissolved at death. The Greeks believed the human soul was immortal and aspired to freedom, while the body was a temporary prison that held the soul in place. After death the soul continued on its journey and (over time) was the companion of many bodies both human and animal.
